"I was called 'Tex' because I was from Texas -- I think that happened to several other Texans, too. Anchored off Greenock, Scotland, several of us got in an LCVP with our newly-issued .45 pistols and some practice targets and went ashore in Loch Long. A friend from New York scored higher that I did, which led him to exclaim, 'I out-shot Tex Holmes.' I didn't have the heart to tell him I'd never held a .45 before."
